      <image:title>About Us - What’s a Moravian?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Moravian Church traces its roots back to 1457 from the original Czech Unity of the Brethren. We are one of the oldest Protestant Denominations in existence, and we exist all over the world in small pockets, the largest of which is on the Swahili coast in Africa. We have always claimed simplicity in our theology, and placed great emphasis on the fellowship of the body of Christ. We affirm most if not all of the same creeds as other Christian denominations. We also have affirmed Jesus Christ as the Chief Elder of our Church since 1741, essentially proclaiming that no one person can govern the Church alone, and that our Savior is the only one worthy of that title. The modern Moravian Church organizes itself into a Unity of Provinces, all governed by individual synods. Each congregation is governed by its own yearly synod we call Church council. The Moravian motto you see in the seal adjacent, reads: “Our Lamb has conquered, let us follow him” in English. Another motto the Church has adopted through the years is: In essentials, Unity; In nonessentials, Liberty; In all things, Love” Overall, we recognize ourselves as a Church in need of God’s grace on a daily basis, and strive to serve the Holy Trinity alongside our siblings in Christ, and Interfaith partners until He comes. <image:caption>“The Moravian Star has a three-fold message. It testifies to the greatness of the Creator who made the stars on the fourth day, countless in number, differing in glory, and praising the might that laid the foundations of the world. Second, it is a reminder of the star that once led the Wise Men from their distant homes [to the Christ-child]. Third, it points to Jesus Christ whose light shines in the darkness, and who is the bright and morning star.” (Ed. <image:title>Daily Text - The Moravian Daily Texts</image:title>
<image:caption>A practice that began in 1728, when Count Zinzendorf, the leader of the Renewed Moravian Church started selecting a Daily Watchword from the Old Testament, and later added a New Testament text to match. It was read to the community each day for them to ponder and pray upon. They began to be published for the whole year starting in 1731, and each text has always been paired with a hymn stanza. When Zinzendorf entered into the nearer presence of His Savior in 1760, a committee took up this responsibility of selecting texts. In Herrnhut Germany, where the Renewed Moravian Church began, this practice continues to this day, and is printed in 50 different languages to be distributed around the world. Each entry ends with a prayer written by someone in the Worldwide Unity. This daily devotion serves thousands around the globe. <image:title>Unity Prayer Watch - Unity Prayer Watch</image:title>
<image:caption>Although the Moravian Church traces its roots back to 1457, the Renewed Moravian Church is considered to have been established in the year of 1727 in Herrnhut, Saxony (modern day Germany). This happened on May 12th of that year when a covenant called the Brotherly Agreement was signed. However, upon hearing news of this signing, Dresden, the capital of Saxony, threatened to dissolve the Herrnhut community. The grounds for the charge: this covenant was a new profession of faith in opposition to the state Lutheran Church, and therefore illegal. In response, this newly formed group of Christians, claiming to be a new religious community within the state Church, began what is known as a prayer watch. Essentially each hour of everyday was divided between 24 men and 24 women, who agreed, one of each, to pray continuously during their assigned hour for Herrnhut during this time of crisis. This 24-hour prayer watch proved so beneficial that it was continued for nearly three decades after its initial assembly on August 27th, 1727. It has been revived many times since then, most notably during the first Worldwide Unity Synod in 1957. Since 1957, there has been a Moravian around the world praying for their church, and the world every minute of every day.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Lovefeast - The Lovefeast</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a part of worshiping God that has been practiced by Christians since the apostolic era - derived from what is typically known as an agape love meal. Put very simply, a lovefeast, in the modern Moravian sense, is the sharing of food and drink during a public service of worship and the singing of hymns to accompany the serving of food. It is an act of fellowship during worship, an acknowledgement of unity before God established by Christ through the sharing of a simple meal. The first Moravian lovefeast took place on August 13th of 1727. It was an event that came as a result of a great reconciliation in the community. Members of the community were divided, and their footing unsure, but by some movement of the Holy Spirit, they were inspired to stay after worship that day. To pray together, to sing together, and to cry together. The food was brought out not as a central focus, but because they had been gathered together so long that they needed to eat! Today we continue the tradition, praying for the movement of the Spirit in our midst.</image:caption>
